Choral festival offers high school students preview of College life, choir

High school students from across Massachusetts will get a crash course in college life this weekend and sing with the Holy Cross College Choir.

The music department is hosting a high school choral festival on Feb. 3. Approximately 150 students from four high schools will be joining the Holy Cross College Choir for rehearsals in the afternoon, and then for a public concert in St. Joseph Chapel at 7 p.m. The evening concert is free and open to the public.

Students from Wellesley High School, Boston College High School, Longmeadow High School, and Cathedral High School will get a tour of the campus, hear a performance by the Fools on the Hill a cappella group, enjoy a pizza dinner, before the day ends with the evening concert.

Each high school group will perform for about 10 minutes, before all students unite with the College Choir to sing two pieces, under the direction of Kayla Werlin, Massachusetts American Choral Directors Association President, who will serve as special guest conductor. Werlin is also director of the choir at Longmeadow High School.

“This will be a great opportunity for high school students to experience Holy Cross for a day, to hear other groups perform, and to sing with the Holy Cross College Choir, in a massed choir of over 200 voices,” says Pamela Getnick Mindell, director of the College Choir at Holy Cross.
