One of the World’s Leading Philosophers of Religion to Give Talk on ‘Seeing Pictures of God’

WORCESTER, Mass. – D.Z. Phillips, Rush Rhees Professor Emeritus at the University of Wales and Danforth Chair in Philosophy of Religion at Claremont Graduate University, will give a talk titled "Seeing Pictures of God" on March 21 at 4 p.m. in the Rehm Library at the College of the Holy Cross. The event is free and open to the public.

The lecture will explore questions that have implications for religious belief, such as: What if someone offered to show you a picture of God? How would you react? What would it be like to see such a picture? Did Michelangelo fail to paint such a picture when he depicted God creating Adam? What if such pictures cease to mean anything for human beings? What if they had never existed?

Phillips’ research interests include the philosophy of religion, ethics, philosophy and literature and Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein. He is the director of the Rush Rhees and Peter Winch Archives and editor of the quarterly journal Philosophical Investigations (Blackwell Publishers), which contains papers in every area of philosophy, and the Swansea Series in Philosophy (Palgrave), in which authors are expected to engage with the thought of influential philosophers and contemporary movements.

His most recent books include The Problem Of Evil And The Problem Of God (Augsburg Fortress Publishers, 2005), Religion and Friendly Fire (Ashgate Publishing, 2004) and Recovering Religious Concepts (Palgrave Macmillan, 1999).

The event is sponsored by the Center for Religion, Ethics and Culture.
