The music department at Holy Cross is distinctive among nationally-ranked liberal arts colleges for its quality, range, and robust offerings.
There are numerous ways for students to explore the field’s many subdisciplines — from composition to theory to popular music. And students — majors and non-majors alike — rave about their professors and the opportunities to showcase their talents.
Music majors have the benefit of studying with an award-winning faculty of composers, performers, and musicologists. Classes are small and the curriculum includes specialized tutorials and private lessons. Students may borrow instruments from a collection that the department houses.
The College boasts excellent performance spaces, including the Brooks Concert Hall, which offers superb acoustics and is the venue for most concerts performed by music faculty and students. Other facilities include a music library with state-of-the-art listening equipment and a sizable collection of scores, books, recordings, and videos; practice rooms with pianos; a studio for electronic and computer music; an ear training lab; and music notation workstations.
The department sponsors student recitals and also encourages participation in the following performing organizations: Holy Cross Chamber Orchestra, Holy Cross Jazz Ensemble, Holy Cross Choir, Holy Cross Chamber Singers, Holy Cross Chamber Music Ensemble, Chapel Choir, Crusader Marching and Pep Band, Gamelan, Madrigals, and the Schola Cantorum.
