Local Politicians Defying Their Own COVID Restrictions Can Be Damaging, Says Holy Cross Professor

As the COVID-19 pandemic surges, several high-profile local leaders around the country are facing criticism for attending dinners and taking vacations, acts that appear to defy their own public health orders.

In a recent interview with Bloomberg's CityLab, Alex Hindman, assistant professor of political science at Holy Cross, warned that local leaders' risk-taking is ill-advised right now and can be read by the public as condescension. 

"We're trying to get people to abide by these measures, for all of our benefits, in some sort of collective good," says Hindman. "If it simply looks like it's about power and privilege, people aren’t going to believe the truth of what they may be saying."
