A Story of Belonging: Kieran Bergin ’27

Each student's journey at Holy Cross is unique. After arriving on campus, emotions can range from the excitement of starting something new to the sadness of leaving something familiar behind and everything in between. It may take time to feel like they belong. So we’ve asked our students: when was the moment you fell in love with Holy Cross?

Kieran Bergin ’27 followed in his family’s footsteps to attend Holy Cross, but he found his own purple pride at his first tailgate, throwing the football around with strangers who became his best friends:

"To be honest, Holy Cross always felt like home. With my parents having gone here, my brother currently here and my grandpa also a graduate, purple has been in my blood for years, so it’s funny that I never really wanted to come here and really just applied for my parents, or so I thought. I think Holy Cross really felt at home early in the first semester throwing the football around with my friends at the tailgate, or going to the BC tailgate. At that point it didn’t feel like I was in the shadow of all my relatives, but rather my experience was mine.

For a little bit of a story, I have been meeting Holy Cross alums my entire life, but flying back from another college, I sat next to an alum and the row behind some people from Worcester. I saw that man at a tailgate my freshman year along with so many other alums and fellow students and that really showed me the Crusader pride and spirit. There are so many Holy Cross alums out in the wild that I always met at the perfect time to relieve any doubts and reiterate that feeling of home we get from this great community."
