It’s Showtime!

Theatre major Katherine Fritz ’08 blogs about latest show, ‘Sweet Charity’

An excerpt from Katherine Fritz’s blog entry from Nov. 9 during My Life with Albertine’s run:

Midway through the second act of Albertine tonight, one of the girls in the show, my dear friend Cara, forgets her hat in the dressing rooms on the fourth floor. She goes upstairs to get it. At the top of the stairs that lead down to the theatre (one staircase, but essentially two stories), she starts to feel a little woozy, but thinks nothing of it, since she’s been fighting off this sinus infection and has been dizzy all day. Moments later, the girl falls — headfirst — down about twenty-five steps and lands at the bottom, still wearing a wig, corset, petticoat, blouse, jacket, skirt, and boots.

And the first thing she asks? “Is my nose broken?” The second thing, “I have to go onstage!”

What will the new show, the Neil Simon classic Sweet Charity, which plays on Feb. 1 at 8 p.m., Feb. 2 at 2 and 8 p.m., and Feb. 3 at 2 p.m. in Fenwick Theatre, bring?

Sweet Charity tells the story of perennial optimist Charity, who is perpetually unlucky in love. The Alternate College Theater, a student-run organization, is presenting the musical. Anticipation across campus is high. In fact, three of the stars — Molly Bier ’11, Katie Lydic ’10, Emily Rast ’09 — grace a part of this week’s cover of the Worcester Magazine and offer a peak behind the scenes.

In the days leading up to the show, nothing seemed to go right, Fritz, a costume designer for the show, reports in her latest entry. Did opening night go off without a hitch? Will any drama ensue during the remainder of its run?
