“Investing in gang members stops violence, author tells Holy Cross audience”

Telegram & Gazette

An article in the Telegram & Gazette highlights the lecture that Rev. Gregory Boyle, S.J., founder of Homeboy Industries, gave at the College of the Holy Cross on September 6. Located in Los Angeles, Homeboy Industries is a gang intervention program that offers employment, training, counseling, and tattoo removal free of charge for young men and women seeking to escape gang life.

Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion, an account of successful and also tragic stories from the program written by Fr. Boyle, was selected as the summer reading book for the Class of 2015 this year.

In his talk, he commented that the main message he wants to get across to readers is, “If there is a fundamental challenge within these stories, it is simply to change our lurking suspicion that some lives matter less than other lives.”
