While large-scale beer powerhouses like Miller, Budweiser and Coors have dominated the industry for decades, the exploding U.S. craft beer industry is bigger than ever. There are more craft breweries in the U.S. that any time in recorded history, but not a lot of research on the industry"s sociological impact.
In a piece for The Conversation, assistant professors of sociology Daina Cheyenne Harvey and Ellis Jones take a deep dive into New England's budding craft beer industry to discover how the movement is taking root in the region.
Since "craft beer often reflects local styles or ingredients," the sociologists find that "New England's history of cottage industries and its pastoral heritage make it a perfect place for the emergence of a craft beer movement."
