Holy Cross Psychology Professor Receives 2021 Joseph B. Gittler Award From the American Psychological Foundation

Mark Freeman, Holy Cross Distinguished Professor of Ethics and Society and professor of psychology, has received the Joseph B. Gittler Award from the American Psychological Foundation for his scholarly and transformative contributions to the philosophical foundations of psychological knowledge.

"I am delighted and honored to receive this award, partly because it lands me in the company of scholars I respect and admire a great deal and partly because it serves to recognize and affirm the work I've been doing over the course of some 35 years," says Freeman. "I'm also thrilled to bring some recognition to Holy Cross, which has been a terrific source of support and inspiration throughout my career."

Freeman, who joined the College as a faculty member in 1986, earned his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago. Freeman is the author of "The Priority of the Other: Thinking and Living Beyond the Self (Oxford, 2014); "Hindsight: The Promise and Peril of Looking Backward" (Oxford, 2010); "Finding the Muse: A Sociopsychological Inquiry into the Conditions of Artistic Creativity" (Cambridge, 1994); "Rewriting the Self: History, Memory, Narrative" (Routledge, 1993); and numerous articles on issues ranging from the psychology of memory and identity to the psychology of art and religion.

Freeman's sixth book, "Do I Look at You with Love? Reimagining the Story of Dementia" (Brill, 2021), in which he recounts the journey of his mother's dementia from his perspective, was published earlier this year.

Winner of the 2010 Theodore R. Sarbin Award in the Society for Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology, Freeman serves as editor for the Oxford University Press series "Explorations in Narrative Psychology."
