WORCESTER, Mass. – The College of the Holy Cross will host a congressional simulation on March 29 at 9 a.m. as part of Associate Professor Donald Brand’s political science course Congress and the Legislative Process. Students from the Worcester and Shrewsbury Public Schools will take part in the proceedings.
In the simulation, each student will play the role of congressman and will be considering a piece of legislation that was once introduced in Congress. The simulation has three stages: a hearing with testimony by expert witnesses (from 9 - 10:30 a.m.); a mark-up session where amendments to the bills will be debated (10:30 a.m. - noon); and a final session of the full House of Representatives. The first two sessions will be in the Hogan Campus Center, Suites A, B, and C, and the final session of the "House" will be in Rehm Library.
Rep. Karyn Polito, R-Shrewsbury, (9 a.m.) and Rep. Vincent A. Pedone, D-Worcester, (10 a.m.) will attend the simulation to offer advice and comments on the proceedings.
The goal of the simulation is to allow college and high school students to personally experience the legislative process and thereby gain a greater appreciation for the skill and knowledge that is required to introduce bills and transform them into laws.
