WORCESTER, Mass. – Hundreds of children and their parents are expected when the Department of Public Safety at the College of the Holy Cross hosts its first Children’s Safety Day Fair on Sunday, May 1 from noon to 4 p.m. in the Hart Recreation Center’s ice rink. The free event is intended for children and families in Worcester, particularly the College Hill and South Worcester communities.
Law enforcement personnel, Holy Cross campus safety officers, community volunteers, and students will participate in the program, which will be held rain or shine.
The fraternal order Freemasons of Massachusetts will offer its comprehensive Child Identification Program, or CHIP, to all children free of charge. Parents who choose to participate will be provided a videotape of the child, a fingerprint card of the child’s fingerprints and a dental impression of the child’s teeth. More than 200,000 children in Massachusetts have participated in the Mason-sponsored CHIP Program.
In addition, children are welcome to bring their bikes as the Department of Public Safety Officers at Holy Cross will provide a bike safety check and a safety obstacle course for children to run through. Bike safety helmets will be given out to the first 100 participants. Bike safety information will also be available.
The Massachusetts State Police will present the "Roll Over Simulator," demonstrating what happens to car occupants when a car flips over with occupants wearing seat belts and not wearing seat belts. Additional information on seat belt use and car safety will be provided.
The Worcester Police will display two police motorcycles.
The fair will also feature face-painting by Holy Cross students, along with free balloons, cookies, brownies, and refreshments.
Photographers are welcome.
