WORCESTER, Mass. – The American Sign Language and Deaf Studies Program announces its calendar of events for the 2006 fall semester. Unless otherwise stated, all events are free and open to the public. The following events take place on the campus of the College of the Holy Cross.
Deaf Awareness Week (Sept. 18 – 21)
Sept. 18; 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Hogan Campus Center, Suite A
“It’s a Deaf Deaf World” interactive workshop. There will be no spoken language used at the workshop so that hearing people can communicate with the deaf using a variety of signing methods. Pre-registration required.

ASL silent dinner with deaf friends. Holy Cross students can use meal plans. Others can purchase individual meals.

Hart Center Ice Rink
The Deaf Studies program at Holy Cross and the Worcester Junior Sharks offer skating lessons to deaf and hard of hearing children, children of deaf adults and siblings of deaf children. Children should be 4 years old or older. Instruction is in ASL. Instruction for new skaters and instruction for skaters already playing hockey and who want to improve their skills is provided. Instructors include deaf and hard of hearing coaches and ASL students from Holy Cross (members of the Holy Cross hockey teams). Cost for the season is $65. Financial assistance is available. Hockey equipment can be borrowed for the season. Pre-registration required.
