WORCESTER, Mass. – Former Holy Cross wide receiver Brett McDermott '09 (Mansfield, Mass.) has signed a free agent contract with the Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League. The signing was officially announced by the Colts on Friday, May 1. McDermott then took part in the Colts' three-day rookie mini-camp from May 1-3 at the Indiana Farm Bureau Football Center.
McDermott was named to the 2008 New England Football Writers All-Star team, after leading the Patriot League and ranking 13th in the nation in kickoff returns during the 2008 season, averaging 26.4 yards on 17 returns with one touchdown. He also ranked second on the team in receiving last year with 43 catches for 491 yards and five scores. McDermott concluded the 2008 campaign with a team-best 998 all-purpose yards, in addition to standing third on the team in scoring with 36 points.
Over the course of his collegiate career, McDermott caught 138 passes for 1,736 yards and 14 touchdowns, while returning 29 kickoffs for 746 yards. He finished his career ranked seventh all-time at Holy Cross in career receptions and eighth in career receiving yards, while his career average of 25.7 yards per kickoff return is the best in school history.
