Go Cross! Crusader Student-Athletes Score in Tournament Play — and Graduation Rates

This year, the Holy Cross men’s and women’s basketball teams not only share 2007 Patriot League Tournament trophies and appearances in the 2007 NCAA tournament.  They also share in the storied Holy Cross tradition of fielding exceptional student-athletes and posting the highest graduation rates in the country.

In a just released study, Holy Cross is cited as the only college playing in NCAA tournament with 100% graduation rates for both the men’s and women’s teams.

Richard Lapchick, coauthor of the study, wrote: “If I could give a combined NCAA men’s and women’s basketball title for academics, it’d go to the Crusaders.”

Lapchick, a commentator for ESPN and chair of the DeVos Sport Business Management Graduate Program at the University of Central Florida, just published “Keeping Score When It Counts:  Graduation Rates for 2007 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Division I Basktball Tournament Teams.”  In it, he looked at the freshman classes that entered school in the period from 1996-99, and included players who transfer, who enter from junior colleges and who graduate late.

A full 25% of current students at Holy Cross are members of the 27 varsity teams.  With many intramural and club sports, the opportunities for students to continue their interest in athletics are plentiful, and the majority of students participate in sports on some level at the College.

As a founding member of the NCAA Division I Patriot League, Holy Cross prides itself on making the academic performance and personal development of each student central goals.
