WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross Chapel Artist Series has three concerts planned for the fall 2000 season.
On Tuesday, Sept. 12, István Ella, a concert organist from Budapest, Hungary, will perform the works of Bach, Liszt, Huzella and Sokola at 8 p.m. in St. Joseph Memorial Chapel.
The winner of numerous international organ competitions, Ella is internationally acclaimed as Hungary's finest organ virtuoso.
On Sunday, Oct. 1, Uhllrich Böhme, a concert organist from Leipzig, Germany, will perform the works of Bach at 3 p.m. in St. Joseph Memorial Chapel. The concert commemorates the 250th anniversary of the composer's death.
Böhme is the organist at the Church of Saint Thomas in Leipzig, where Bach served as music director during the last years of his life. A professor of organ at the Leipzig Conservatory, Böhme has completed worldwide tours as organ soloist and also in association with the famed Boy Choir of St. Thomas Church.
On Sunday, Nov. 12, Martin Jean, a concert organist from New Haven, Conn., will perform the works of Bach at 3 p.m. in St. Joseph Memorial Chapel. This concert also commemorates the 250th anniversary of the composer's death.
Jean has been acclaimed as one of the finest organists of his generation. The winner of the Grand Prix de Chartres, he is currently an associate professor of organ at Yale University. During the past year, Jean studied the organ music of Bach in Germany.
Holy Cross' award-winning Taylor and Boody Organ, a 52-foot high, 10-ton instrument designed in the tradition of 16th- and 17th-century Dutch and north German organs, was built in a two-year period by a team of craftsmen led by George K. Taylor and John Boody. Dedicated in March 1985, it is housed in the St. Joseph Memorial Chapel.
All concerts are free and open to the public.
