"An Evening with Ellen Goodman and Patricia O'Brien:" a Fund-raiser for Abby's House at Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – Nationally syndicated columnist and author Ellen Goodman, along with award-winning journalist and author Patricia O’Brien, will give a fundraising lecture on Wednesday, March 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the Ballroom of the Hogan Campus Center.

"An evening with Ellen Goodman and Patricia O'Brien" will feature two established journalists. Goodman has been with The Boston Globe since 1967. Her column became syndicated in 1976 and today appears on op-ed pages in over 440 newspapers across the country. She has served as a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University. In 1980, Goodman received the Pulitzer Prize for Distinguished Commentary.

O'Brien began her career with The South Bend Tribune. She went on to the Chicago Sun Times as a reporter and columnist. O'Brien later became press secretary for Michael Dukakis' Presidential nomination campaign. She has been a commentator for CBS-TV's "Morning Show" and a contributing writer for Esquire and The New York Times; she too was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, where she met Goodman.

Goodman and O'Brien are friends and co-authors of "I Know Just What You Mean: The Power of Friendship in Women's Lives" (Simon & Schuster, 2000). In their book, they celebrate single motherhood, new jobs and most of all, friendship. They will discuss this book at the lecture.

Co-sponsored by the Holy Cross Chaplains’ Office and Abby’s House, a shelter for women in Worcester, all proceeds from the lecture will go to the shelter. Several nights during the week, Holy Cross women volunteers from the SPUD (Student Programs for Urban Development) program staff Abby’s House.

Tickets for the event are $12 general admission, $10 students and senior citizens. The public is invited and tickets are sold through the Chaplains’ Office and Abby’s House.
