Blog: Holy Cross Perfect for Shapleigh ’13 — Despite Being 1,200 Miles From Home

‘Friendliness, enthusiasm, and service-mindedness’ of students sealed the deal, Missouri native says

NAME Katharine Shapleigh ’13

HOMETOWN St. Louis, Mo.

AREAS OF STUDY Undeclared

WHY SHE CHOSE HOLY CROSS “I chose Holy Cross because of its small size, great academic reputation, location, and its Jesuit identity. I am excited to have the opportunity to work closely with and get to know my professors. In addition to the impressive stats, I really liked the people I met on my visits, and the way the campus had such a tangible community feel. I loved the idea of “Sader Nation” and a lot of school spirit. I was also really impressed with the number of people participating in Student Programs for Urban Development in Worcester. The friendliness, enthusiasm, and service-mindedness of the students definitely made Holy Cross the place I wanted to be — even if it is 1,200 miles from home!”

ACTIVITIES Student Programs for Urban Development (Friendly House), Hanselman House Council (community ambassador), intramural soccer, greeter in the Admissions office, greeter for Mass

WHAT SHE’S MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO “Meeting new people, getting involved in the Holy Cross community and in Worcester through SPUD, taking advantage of as many new opportunities as possible, and my classes in general.”

WHY SHE’S BLOGGING “I really enjoy having new experiences, and I really like to write. I’m having a great time so far at Holy Cross, and I want prospective students to be able to see what it’s like to be a Holy Cross student.”
