Mayor Joseph M. Petty announced today that Dec. 30, 2015, is Rivalry Day in the City of Worcester. Boston University travels into Worcester to face the Holy Cross men’s basketball team in a battle for the Turnpike Trophy at 7:05 p.m. on the campus of the College of the Holy Cross.
The Dec. 30 basketball game between Holy Cross and Boston University gives the Worcester community an incredible opportunity to claim bragging rights. With a strong sports community, Worcester has the power to emerge victorious.
“I encourage all of Worcester to stand with Holy Cross Athletics as they compete against Boston University,” said Petty. “This is a time to display our collective pride for our city and gather together around an intense rivalry. Represent Worcester and the Heart of the Commonwealth as the Holy Cross men’s basketball team battles for the Turnpike Trophy.”
The Turnpike Trophy competition is an athletic series between the in-state Patriot League rivals that will span at least 21 varsity sports. Points are awarded for head-to-head victories in both the regular season and the postseason, or a higher finish at conference championships in cross country, rowing, swimming & diving, track & field and women’s golf.
“In its inaugural year, the Turnpike Trophy will be awarded to victor of the rivalry series in all sports between Holy Cross and Boston University,” Holy Cross director of athletics Nathan Pine said. “Both teams will be hungry for a win to start Patriot League play and I have no doubt that the competition on the court will be fierce. We look forward to welcoming fans from all across the city to join in the excitement at the Hart Center on December 30th.”
