The new residence hall for upperclassmen on the Holy Cross campus is the picture of modern living.
On the inside loop of McCarthy Lane, near the Hart Recreation Center and the Hogan Campus Center, sits the recently completed $19.2 million Figge Hall, a 156-bed townhouse-style residence hall.
Reflecting the current trends in student housing, each of the 39 units accommodates four students and features a common area, kitchen, two bathrooms and two bedrooms. The kitchen includes a full-size refrigerator, range, microwave and dishwasher. Each floor has a study room, and the main floor features a function room that is used to host social gatherings.
Similar to Williams Hall, the other apartment-style residence on campus, the two-wing building features floor-to-ceiling windows in the front and back of the main entrance area, giving the building an airy and bright aura. Oh, and did we mention it’s air conditioned?
Having this kind of housing to offer students is not just a matter of catering to expectations, though. It’s about creating better learning and living environments at the residential College. Figge Hall, which opened its doors to students this semester, has reduced the number of students in triples and brings more off-campus students back to campus.
It is named in honor of John K. Figge ’59 (1938-2009), a former member of the Board of Trustees.
Rev. Michael C. McFarland, S.J., president, will preside at a dedication and blessing ceremony for Figge Hall on Oct. 1 at noon. The Holy Cross community is invited to attend.
