Summer baseball is officially returning to Worcester—more specifically to Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field this weekend. Last fall, the College of the Holy Cross announced the new partnership with the City, local business owner John W.S. Creedon Jr., and the Futures League, to bring summer baseball back to the Worcester community.
The Bravehearts, members of the 10-team Futures Collegiate Baseball League, include four Holy Cross varsity baseball members: infielder Quinn Moynihan ’17, pitcher Sean Gustin ’16, first baseman Shane Sandoval ’16 and pitcher George Capen ’17.
The Bravehearts will take on the Pittsfield Suns in their home opener on Thursday, June 5, to what general manager, David Peterson hopes will be a full stadium. His high hopes extend to what he thinks will be a more “hands-on” ownership of the Bravehearts by John Creedon Sr. and Jr. Peterson asserts that having the Creedons, who own a local catering and tent rental company, “means a lot because they've been in business here in the city for 30 years now, and they understand the fabric of the Worcester community.” John Sr.’s plans to work the Bravehearts owned concession booths himself, to ensure “the food is prepared properly and the lines aren't too long.”
On June 6, Central Mass rival, Wachusett, visits, followed by a post-game fireworks display, and two-time FCBL Champion, Nashua, comes to town on Saturday, June 7. The opening weekend will be capped off with an afternoon game on Sunday, June 8, against the Seacoast Mavericks from Portsmouth, N.H.
