According to a recent piece in Worcester Magazine, Charles Baker, associate professor emeritus of French at Holy Cross, would hold a title in the “Worcester Book of Records” for his estimated 2,600 movie screenings for Holy Cross students and the Worcester community.
Since 1963, Baker has operated the Seelos Film Series at the College, in which free movies are screened in Francis Xavier Seelos Theatre in Kimball Hall. This year’s line-up includes Academy Award nominee “The Martian” as well as smaller art house pieces such as “45 Years.
“What is now the Seelos series had several incarnations over the years,” Worcester Magazine reports. The series began as a break for students during final exams, drawing “packed houses.” Wednesday night screenings, which were often films similar to what Baker would show in his cinema class, quickly became a tradition that even alumni, such as MSNBC host Chris Matthews ’67, still recall.
Despite the changing face of film entertainment, attendees “just want to be told a story,” Worcester Magazine writes, a tradition that Baker continues to keep alive and well today.
