Current and former elected officials, along with Holy Cross colleagues, celebrated at Worcester City Hall to praise the civic contributions of John B. Anderson ’57, associate professor emeritus of history and former mayor of the City.
The occasion was the unveiling of an official portrait of Anderson, to be hung in City Hall alongside those of other past mayors and city managers. Anderson, a city councilor for 22 years, served a term as mayor in 1986.
Rev. Michael C. McFarland, S.J., president of the College, joined Massachusetts Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray, former mayor; Mayor Joseph C. O’Brien; City Manager Michael V. O’Brien; Michael J. Donoghue, a former city councilor and Worcester County treasurer; and dozens of others.
Anderson was mayor during the beginning of negotiations to establish Worcester’s “sister city” relationship with Pushkin, a town just outside St. Petersburg in northwestern Russia. Anderson’s portrait is a gift of the artist Sergei Artemyev, a well-known artist from the Pushkin region. Through the sister city program, activities between Worcester and Pushkin have included youth programs, cultural exchanges, business education, and humanitarian projects. Artemyev participated in the International Center of Worcester’s artist exchange in 2004 and 2005.
Artemyev’s work is based on a portrait of Anderson, taken by photographer John Buckingham, of the College’s audio-visual services department.
