'Holy Cross lecturer raising awareness of deaf culture' Telegram & Gazette Read Time 1 Minute Academics Issues and Ideas John Pirone, director of the Deaf Studies Program at the College of the Holy Cross, provides insight on deaf culture as a consultant for Nina Raine’s 2010 play “Tribes,” now in its area premiere by the SpeakEasy Stage Company at the Boston Center for the Arts. Being deaf himself, Pirone understands and attends to the discrepancies between the deaf culture and the hearing culture firsthand, and brings his shared experiences with the struggles of the protagonist to his role as an advisor for the play. "I am the educational resource provider, expanding extra ideas," he said in a recent interview.Pirone speaks to the validity of the play by identifying the same lessons in his classroom, "The issues I teach are within the play," he observed. "There are a lot of underlying messages. Billy[the protagonist] grew up with a hearing family. That is a reflection of many deaf people in America."
