Being deaf himself, Pirone understands and attends to the discrepancies between the deaf culture and the hearing culture firsthand, and brings his shared experiences with the struggles of the protagonist to his role as an advisor for the play. "I am the educational resource provider, expanding extra ideas," he said in a recent interview.Pirone speaks to the validity of the play by identifying the same lessons in his classroom, "The issues I teach are within the play," he observed. "There are a lot of underlying messages. Billy[the protagonist] grew up with a hearing family. That is a reflection of many deaf people in America."
