“The visual aspects of the medium allow for people to interrogate the way particular images shape our perceptions of ourselves and of those around us,” Santos said when explaining why graphic novels are such a great entry point for cultural studies. “Because of its status as a marginal literature, it was often embraced by people of identities that represent alternatives to the mainstream.”
