ESPN Interviews Holy Cross Economics Professor About Dilemma Facing Chinese-endorsed NBA Stars

In recent years, high-profile NBA players have been praised for using their voices for social change, but now 17 current players are being scrutinized for their lucrative endorsement deals with Chinese companies accused of using forced labor, in region where China is accused of genocide.

Victor Matheson, a professor of economics at the College of the Holy Cross and renowned expert on sports economics, spoke with ESPN about how players might be rationalizing signing deals with the divisive brands, given their relatively short careers in which they can earn big money.

"It's pretty easy to be on the right side of things when there is not a lot of money involved," said Matheson. "For many players profiting from shoe deals with Chinese firms, the Uyghur genocide may feel remote, an issue to which they may say, 'Sorry, that is not my deal, not my problem.'"
