Osvaldo Golijov, the Loyola Professor of Music in the music department at the College of the Holy Cross, who NPR calls “one of today’s most popular composers,” wrote the cello concerto “Azul” for world renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma in 2006. Now, more than a decade later, a recording of “Azul” will debut on an album by Brooklyn chamber orchestra The Knights.
According to NPR, Golijov’s cello concerto blends influences from many musical traditions, the audience never knowing when “a snippet of tango, gypsy or klezmer music might break the surface.”
