Blog: Griffin ’21 Chose Holy Cross for Its Emphasis on Personalized Education

NAME Elizabeth Griffin '21

HOMETOWN Cohasset, Mass.

AREAS OF STUDY History and Music double major

WHY SHE CHOSE HOLY CROSS "The college decision process was a long and hard one for me. I knew I wanted a small liberal arts school with a good music program, but that was about it! I ultimately chose Holy Cross over a similar college in Massachusetts because of its core Jesuit values, small class sizes, and the student body. I had gone to Catholic school my whole life, and attending a college with similar values was important to me. I also value the student-professor relationship; each professor at Holy Cross teaches here because s/he genuinely wants to get to know the students.

Holy Cross has not only lived up to my expectations in my first year, but has exceeded them in ways I could not imagine. This past year has only confirmed that I made the best college decision for me. I have learned so much more than I could have imagined, both inside and outside of the classroom, and I’ve made some of my best friends for life."

ACTIVITIES Admissions tour guide, Fall Gateways Orientation Leader, Chamber Orchestra, Concert band, clarinet lessons, and Student Programs for Urban Development (SPUD) at the Nativity School in Worcester

WHAT SHE’S MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO " While I am looking forward to continuing many of my activities from my first year - including SPUD, orchestra, band, and the blog - I am most excited about my new classes. This semester, I am taking Theory of Music 3 and History of Western Music 1 in the Music department; Europe: 1890-1945 in the History department; and Ethics of Capitalism, a political science seminar for students selected as Charles Carroll fellows.

I’m also looking forward to my new roles on campus, both as a tour guide for the Office of Admissions and continuing my role as a Fall Gateways Orientation Leader, helping my first year orientees adjust to life at Holy Cross."

WHY SHE’S BLOGGING " I am continuing my blog from last year because I enjoyed sharing my experience with people interested in student life at the College and it was a great way to connect with prospective students!"
