In an opinion piece for America Magazine, Timothy O’Brien "06, a Jesuit scholastic preparing for the priesthood, reflected on his first encounter with the Ignatian value of being “contemplatives in action.” It was an introductory art history course at the College of the Holy Cross with Professor Joanna Ziegler, where he and his classmates were asked to simply contemplate over a painting at the Worcester Art Museum as a way to experience God’s graces of mystery, beauty, and meditation.
O’Brien wrote, “For her [Professor Ziegler], introducing a class to art history involved our learning how to see, understood as both a spiritual and physical activity. We learned, or tried at least, to be attentive and heedful, to wonder at something beautiful.”
Ziegler passed away in November 2011.
