Construction on two new buildings at the College of the Holy Cross that would house nearly 150 students could begin as soon as this summer. Students could start living in the apartment-style units with full kitchens as early as the fall of 2023.
The anticipated dates come as the City of Worcester approved the project in early March. The next step is approval from the College’s board of trustees.
The plans include 148 total units for juniors and seniors in two buildings – one at the corner of City View Street and another on College Street.
"Residential living at Holy Cross is critical to the growth and formation of our students,” says Paul A. Irish, associate dean of students. "The residence halls are a place for our students to meet and engage each other, process what they are learning in the classroom explore the responsibilities of community living. By senior year, students are excited to live more independently and the townhouses will allow an attractive new option for us.
"While our current senior apartments are designed for four students, these townhouses will house as many as eight students on three floors. The location, on City View Street, affords a more residential feel than some of our traditional residence halls."
Before construction can commence, several College-owned buildings will be razed. The College is working to relocate folks who currently use the buildings.
The project remains in the planning stages, and more information will be shared with students as it moves forward, according to a statement from Dottie A. Hauver, vice president for administration and finance, and Michele C. Murray, vice president for student affairs and dean of students.
