In a Letter to the Editor published in The New York Times, Jerry Lembcke, associate professor of sociology at the College of the Holy Cross, warns against labeling James Holmes, the man accused of the Colorado movie theater shooting, as a "loner" too quickly.

"The association of violence with so-called loners risks denigrating the very idea of personal independence by stigmatizing nonconforming lifestyles," he wrote.
