‘9 to 5’ Sequel Still Relevant in #MeToo America, Holy Cross Professor Writes in Washington Post

Almost four decades after the 1980 workplace comedy "9 to 5" opened, telling the story of three secretaries who get even with their sexist boss, it was revealed that a sequel is in the works.

In an op-ed published by the Washington Post, Anne Blaschke, visiting assistant professor of history, says that although the film is almost 40 years old, the sexual harassment and gender inequality experienced by women in it still resonate today.

"Exposing the similarities between this 1980 film and the lives of American working women today can help advance efforts to eradicate the sexism that continues to pervade the workplace," said Blaschke. "And in today's individualized 'disruption' economy, women advocating for a collective takeover could be more radical than kidnapping the boss."
