2010: Year in Review

Science complex opens, residence hall construction begins, students raise thousands for Haiti relief, and more

At Holy Cross, each year is marked by new achievements and accomplishments.  Here are some of the most notable from 2010:

  • A completely renovated Haberlin Hall — housing chemistry, physics and some of the mathematics and computer science departments — opened its doors to students on Jan. 20. more »
  • Students mobilized expansive efforts and raised $9,400 for Haiti relief. Rev. Michael C. McFarland, S.J., president of the College, matched that amount, bringing the total contribution to $18,800. more »
  • Hundreds of students took an “alternative” spring break by spending their vacations doing service work, learning how to start a business, or discovering the varied career options available in public interest work. more »
  • Holy Cross was named to the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement. Holy Cross is one of only 115 colleges nationwide to receive the honor “with distinction.” more »
  • Holy Cross celebrated the official opening of the Integrated Science Complex on March 23. The new space ensures that the College will continue to offer students an excellent undergraduate science education in the liberal arts. more »
  • The groundbreaking of a new student residence hall took place in April. The 156-bed townhouse-style residence hall will house upperclass students. more »
  • Thanks to a 3-0 victory at Lehigh, the Holy Cross baseball team played in its first-ever Patriot League Tournament Championship. more »
  • Ani Nalbandian ’09 received a coveted two-year Postbaccalaureate Intramural Research Training Award from the National Institutes of Health. more »
  • Six recent graduates from Holy Cross were awarded Fulbright grants to work and teach abroad. more »
  • Mark Shriver ’86 was the principal speaker at the College’s 164th Commencement Exercises where 715 men and women were awarded bachelor of arts degrees. more »
  • Holy Cross received a major grant from the Henry Luce Foundation in the amount of $420,532 to encourage women undergraduates to major in the physical sciences, including mathematics, computer science, physics, and chemistry. more »
  • English professor Sarah Stanbury was one of 180 recipients of the Guggenheim Fellowship award and was selected from a group of nearly 3,000 applicants. more »
  • Holy Cross closed fiscal year 2010 with a 53.9 percent alumni participation rate — placing the College among the top 10 colleges and universities in the country.
  • Nicolás Sánchez, professor of economics at Holy Cross, and two of his students, Christopher Kopp ’11 and Francis Sanzari ’11, authored a book that critically examines the U.S. financial crisis. more »
  • The 700-plus members of the highly-accomplished Class of 2014 arrived on campus at the end of August. more »
  • Newsweek.com was on campus on move-in day to film what is an emotional day for parents and students alike, and to capture a moving Holy Cross tradition: Mass of the Holy Spirit. more »
  • The Holy Cross community and members of the construction team celebrated a milestone in the progress of the College’s new residence hall with a topping-off ceremony — traditionally held when a building reaches its height. more »
  • Dave Isay, founder of StoryCorps and author of Listening is an Act of Love, addressed more than 150 second-year students during his visit to Holy Cross. more »
  • Holy Cross’ accreditation was continued for another 10 years, following a rigorous self-study conducted by the College community and a campus visit by a review team  of higher education professionals who praised Holy Cross for integrating mission into all aspects of the educational program. more »
  • Bob Woodward, one of America’s most accomplished investigative journalists, non-fiction author, and former assistant managing editor of The Washington Post, delivered a talk before a packed audience in the Hogan Campus Center Ballroom. more »
  • Ten members of the Holy Cross Class of 2010 joined Teach for America, a program that trains top students of all academic majors to teach in low-income communities. more »
  • Holy Cross ranked 15th in Kiplinger’s compilation of best values in liberal arts colleges that combine “excellent academics while keeping costs to a minimum.” more »
  • Many campus organizations worked together to ensure Holy Cross students cast their ballots in the midterm election. more »
  • In its annual list, The Chronicle of Higher Education reported that Holy Cross was one of the top producers of Fulbright scholarships for U.S. students. more »
  • Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., ’62, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at the National Institutes of Health, spoke about his career before hundreds of students, faculty and members of the community during a talk titled “Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases: The Perpetual Challenge to Global Health,” in the Hogan Campus Center Ballroom. more »
  • Holy Cross ranks first in student participation among baccalaureate institutions for long-term study abroad programs, according to a report released by the Institute of International Education. more »
  • The major components of the new Integrated Science Complex at Holy Cross earned LEED Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council, a national organization that certifies buildings that are green and sustainable, and protect the environment. more »
